Prof Tim Noakes, OMS
MBChB, MD, DSc, FACSM, (hon) FFSEM (UK)
Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Prof. Noakes studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT), obtaining a MBChB degree and an MD and DSc (Med) in Exercise Science. Noakes has published more than 450 scientific publications and in 2003 received the UCT Book Award for Lore of Running (4th Edition), considered to be the “bible of the sport”. He has written many other books and is currently authoring one on nutrition.
He is rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa and received the Order of Mapungubwe, Silver, from the President of South Africa for his “excellent contribution in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise”. Highly acclaimed in his field and having been physically active all his life, running more than 70 marathons and ultra marathons, including seven 90km Comrades Marathons, Noakes, now aged 63, still takes part in races up to 21kms.
